Financial Analysis of a Grid-connected Photovoltaic System in South Florida

In this paper the performance and financial analysis of a grid-connected photovoltaic system installed at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is evaluated. The power plant has the capacity of 14.8 kW and has been under operation since August 2014. This solar PV system is composed of two 7.4 kW sub-arrays, one fixed and one with single axis tracking. First, an overview of the system followed by local weather characteristics in Boca Raton, Florida is presented. In addition, monthly averaged daily solar radiation in Boca Raton as well as system AC are calculated utilizing the PVwatts simulation calculator. Inputs such as module and inverter specifications are applied to the System Advisor Model (SAM) to design and optimize the system. Finally, the estimated local load demand as well as simulation results are extracted and analyzed.Comment: 6 Pages, IEEE PVSC 2017 Conference, Washington D.

Analysis of citation rate of papers with titles containing a country name

Choosing the right title for a paper is essential for attracting readers and receiving citations, and various studies have been done on this subject. This research sought those papers citation rate with the country name ‘Iran’ in their title published during 2010-2014 using Web of Science citation index. It tried to identify highly cited papers, disciplines, distribution of papers by type and geography of the paper with this feature. Moreover, it observed the relationship between Iranian and international authors in the production of such papers and their citation rate. Using scientometric method, 12,026 papers with the word ‘Iran’ in the titles were examined, and their Web of Science database citations were analyzed from 2010 to 2014. Citation rates of papers written by Iranian researchers and researchers from other countries were compared according to the research questions. The results showed that the majority of these papers were produced in Iran, and among foreign countries, the United States had the highest share in producing such papers. Most of these papers were in geology, occupational health, and environmental science. Moreover, it was revealed that citation rate for papers containing Iran in the title has decreased over the years and the downward trend has been similar for national and international studies

Side-Channel Leakage through Static Power – Should We Care about in Practice? –

    Get PDF
By shrinking the technology static power consumption of CMOS circuits is becoming a major concern. In this paper, we present the first practical results of exploiting static power consumption of FPGA-based cryptographic devices in order to mount a key-recovery side-channel attack. The experiments represented here are based on three Xilinx FPGAs built on 65nm, 45nm, and 28nm process technologies. By means of a sophisticated measurement setup and methodology we demonstrate an exploitable information leakage through static power of the underlying FPGAs. The current work highlights the feasibility of side-channel analysis attacks by static power that have been known for years but have not been performed and investigated in practice yet. This is a starting point for further research investigations, and may have a significant impact on the efficiency of DPA countermeasures in the near future

    Wire-Tap Codes as Side-Channel Countermeasure - an FPGA-based experiment

In order to provide security against side-channel attacks a masking scheme which makes use of wire-tap codes has recently been proposed. The scheme benefits from the features of binary linear codes, and its application to AES has been presented in the seminal article. In this work – with respect to the underlying scheme – we re-iterate the fundamental operations of the AES cipher in a hopefully more understandable terminology. Considering an FPGA platform we address the challenges each AES operation incurs in terms of implementation complexity. We show different scenarios on how to realize the SubBytes operation as the most critical issue is to deal with the large S-boxes encoded by the underlying scheme. Constructing various designs to actualize a full AES-128 encryption engine of the scheme, we provide practical side-channel evaluations based on traces collected from a Spartan-6 FPGA platform. As a result, we show that – despite nice features of the scheme - with respect to its area and power overhead its advantages are very marginal unless its fault-detection ability is also being employed

The Investigation of Cultural Factors Affecting the Sustainable Development in Yazd, Iran

Culture is the main factor and is regarded as the engine of sustainable development that without considering it, development programs would not be successful. Cultural factors play a vital role in sustainable development and sustainable development planning should be based on different cultures. Yazd in many years had considerable share in the field of cultural and religious in the country. But a glance at the current situation of the city that perhaps the cultural climate of the city has been neglected, the continuation of historical role and identity of the city, as well as improvement the lives of residents of the city without understanding the cultural factors affecting sustainable development does not seem possible. In the cultural issues, there are various indices that affect on development. In this paper, combining some of the models include the development of culture and the experiences of other countries and division of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, four basic indicators with the sub- indicators for each indicator have been specified. Given the descriptive nature of the investigation, in order to collect required data and test questions the questionnaire has been used. The first part of questionnaire consisted of demographic questions. Other questions have been considered to measure the components and based on assumptions of the study. Questionnaires were distributed on the basis of statistical sampling in Yazd city. The research method is descriptive survey. The study population in our research included Yazd citizens over 18 years old with a history of more than two years residency in the city of Yazd. Based on the results of the questionnaires, the hypothesis of effectiveness of two indicators of identity and social order was accepted and effectiveness of the two indicators of involvement and cultural engagement and social capital was not approved. In the end, some strategies of urban management approach to effectiveness of affective cultural factors on sustainable development have been provided

Impact of controllable superconducting series reactor in transient recovery voltage of circuit breaker

Series reactors as fault current limiters (FCLs) are extensively employed to enhance power grid protection issues. Utilizing superconducting technology is a viable solution to approach FCLs toward commercializing. The concern of transient recovery voltage (TRV) of the circuit breaker becomes more considerable due to FCL’s high stored energy in the case of fault current limiting mode. This paper firstly focuses on the analysis of TRV under the presence of an inductive-based superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) installed in a power grid, and then it investigates the impact of a controllable superconducting series reactor (CSSR) in TRV of the circuit breaker. The obtained results show that the synchronous operation of a CSSR with a circuit breaker substantially declines TRV
